Summer is winding down and that means lazy days by the pool are being swapped out for pop quizzes in the classroom. Your children may be dreading it, but you as the parent can get them pumped up and excited about learning and going back to school. Enjoy these motivational quotes that are perfect for embracing the academic year whether it’s in-person or still virtual.

1. “The more you read, the more you’ll know. The more you know, the more places you’ll go”  -Dr. Seuss

Theodore Geisel or more commonly known as Dr.Seuss gave us this inspirational quote back in 1978 in the book I Can Read With My Eyes Shut, which still applies in today's society. Dr. Seuss is credited for helping change education in America by inspiring the youth to read more with his playful literature.

“I’d like to say I got into children’s books because I had a burning passion, a great message to bring to the youth of the world,” he told an interviewer late in life, 

2. “Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to freedom.” -Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is an avid believer in the power of education and the impact it can have on saving one's life.

“I value nothing more in the world than education,” Winfrey said in 2010

3.“Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.”  -Malala Yousafzai

A year after almost being assassinated by the Taliban in Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai stood proud as she delivered a moving speech at Harvard's Sanders Theatre in 2013. At just 16 years old facing a crowd of 900 people, Malala was presented with the humanitarian award after becoming a universal icon for women's education.

She is known for many great works but most notably her work on the American "edutainnment" franchise of The Magic School Bus. The tv series presented a world of imagination and endless possibilities when it came to learning. Anything was possible.

One of Mandela's most powerful quotes on education. He believed education has the power to change the world.

“Yeah, I'm a thrill-seeker, but crikey, education's the most important thing,” Irwin told Scientific American in 2001.

9.“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” -Malcolm X

Malcolm X was known as being self-taught. He did not have any academic achievements but continued in his pursuit of seeking knowledge in any way he could. Whether it was reading a new book or memorizing the dictionary, Malcolm could not devour enough.

Jenny Han is an author of young adult and children's fiction. As a former librarian, Han understands the impact of literature on the youth. She also believes that the teenage years are the most fertile because it's a time for so many firsts which is the most exciting. 

Hopefully, the emotions conjured up by your children are happy ones about going back to school and if not, then be sure to give them a grade-a pep-talk and include some inspiration from above.
