Clothing styles around the world have experienced a great deal of change throughout the centuries. However, one thing that shouldn't change is the respect we need to have for our bodies. Despite popular trends, we should try to remain modest in our dress, appearance and actions.
1. Our bodies are sacred
Since we are created by God, we need to understand that our bodies are sacred, and we should dress and take care of our bodies accordingly. Our bodies house our spirits. The way we treat ourselves has an effect upon our inner-self, our thoughts and our actions. What we do on the outside has an effect on what happens on the inside, and vice versa.
2. Your body is a temple
Think of various temples of different religions around the world. What makes them special? How do we act when we visit these places of worship? How would you feel to see one of these places desecrated? Just like these sacred buildings, your body is a temple. In the Bible, 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 says, "What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
3. Modesty is more than just what you wear
Modesty includes how you dress, how you act and what you say. It is important to show respect for yourself and others by choosing clothes appropriate for your body type. For instance, the same outfit may be considered modest on one person while on another it may be inappropriate. Actions speak louder than words, so controlling our behavior so that we act respectfully is also important. Using vulgar language, speaking crudely or even gossiping can be considered immodest language. These principles have an effect on who you become - whether for better or worse.
4. Appearance is also important to show respect for our sacred bodies
Being well-groomed, having good hygiene and maintaining a healthy lifestyle make up a good portion of this. But, also avoiding extremes in styles is a key factor. Many people have chosen to have excessive tattoos and piercings or have indulged in other forms of physical mutilations. This does not express a reverence for our bodies, nor does it show God that we appreciate what he gave us. Such expressions are often a physical manifestation of what is happening within. Back to the temple analogy -what if the temples had graffiti all over or holes in the walls? Would it still be a place you consider sacred and holy?
Our actions, dress and appearance should reflect the sacredness of our bodies. We were created by God. By showing respect to our bodies, and the bodies of others, we can show God that we respect him and are grateful for the gift he gave us. Don't allow the pressures of society's trends to change who you are inside.
