Foster parenting can be a challenging and demanding journey but it's also one of the most rewarding things a person can do. If you've not considered fostering a child before, here are five reasons why you should reconsider:
1. You're needed
Let's face it, there are far too many children in the foster care system. We live in a world full of tremendous opportunity, yet in our communities, there are thousands of children and young people that are living a life full of fear, confusion and disruption. Year over year the demand for foster caretakers increases, so you really are needed.
2. You could help a child form lasting attachments
Studies show that children in care who are able to bond with a foster parent early in their lives go on to have healthier, stable adult relationships. Attachment disorder is a bit of an issue among children in care and many children in the foster care system grow up to have dysfunctional adult lives because they were not shown what it means to have meaningful relationships at a young age. You have the opportunity to show a child in need what it means to love and be loved, which will break a cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment.
3. You could help a child succeed at school
This will also mean that they will most likely be able to succeed in life. Children in care are often victim to falling behind in school due to a lack of stable home life and support. You have the chance as a foster caretaker to help a child grow and develop into a bright young adult by simply encouraging them and giving them a stable life. You would be amazed the difference a warm bed, good dinner and simple routine can make to a child's life.
4. You CAN do it
There are many people that want to get into fostering, but don't believe they can do it. However, you can! You will be amazed at what you can do when you are placed with a child that needs your help. There is absolutely no doubt that it will be emotionally draining at times, and maybe even frustrating, but people who are moved to foster have something special in them - you included.
5. It's a career that changes lives
Many people dream of having a job that they love, and one that they feel also makes a difference. Fostering a child allows you to do just this. Of course, money is not the reason people go into caring for a child, but the fact of the matter is that fostering can be very lucrative. So, if you're in a job you hate, why not look into starting a whole new career in which you can wake up every day knowing you are changing the life of someone forever.
