Moms come in a wide variety. We all have different techniques, and different styles. We also have different levels of happiness; some may be happier than others.
Here are 9 things that happy moms do.
1. Organize their day
A happy mom keeps to a schedule.
A mom that is organized, will be more productive, and keep her home running efficiently. Your schedule may have 30 things on it, or 4, it doesn't matter how much you have to do, just as long as you make a schedule and stick to it. By sticking to a schedule, your kids will know what to expect, they will have familiarity, and organization- something kids thrive on and need to be successful as well.
2. Devote set time for their kids
Happy moms know their kids need their undivided attention for at least a small portion of the day.
We may be with our kids all day long, but not really give them the time they need. It is easy to think that you are there for your kids, when really you are working, on the phone/computer, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, and whatever else is on your list of things to do. Make sure, no matter how busy you are, to take a small part of your day where you give your kids 100% of your attention.
Whether it is listening to a story they are telling you, getting on the floor and playing, or even just cuddling while they watch their favorite TV show. Don't rush through your activity, or tell them you have to hurry, just be with them. By doing this, they will know they are important to you, and as a mom, that makes you happy.
3. Make a meal plan
Happy moms know what they are going to make for dinner.
What mom hasn't found herself looking through her cupboards trying to find something to cook 10 minutes before dinner? Save yourself the headache of scrambling to get a meal together by making a meal plan. Pick 1 day a week to figure out what you are eating for the next week, write out your grocery list, and you're set. No more deciding last minute what to make. It saves time, energy, and you are more likely to eat healthy meals when they are planned out ahead of time.
4. Set up playdates
A happy mom has at least one playdate a month on her calendar.
Having organized activities for your kids is a good thing. It teaches them how to interact with other kids, and gives you an opportunity to socialize with other moms. This is a great way to share ideas, stories, and make friends. Moms need other mom friends just as much as kids need their friends.
5. Exercise
Happy moms exercise.
Exercise allows them to work out frustrations, improve their physical health, and they literally are happier because of the endorphins working out gives them. By making time each day to be physical, you are making yourself happier. Not to mention you are being a great example to your kids and teaching them about living a healthy lifestyle.
6. Take time for themselves
Happy moms know that they need to take time for themselves.
Whether it is pampering themselves with a pedicure once a month, or curling up with a good book for 30 minutes each day. It is important to have a bit of alone time and do something just for them. Being a mom is a 24/7 job, and it can get a bit stressful to be needed all the time. By taking some me time, moms give themselves a moment to regroup, destress, and gear up for whatever is coming next.
7. Not listen to all the haters
Happy moms know that people will talk bad about each other.
They will criticize parenting choices, and tell each other what they should be doing. Learn to block that out. Each child is different, and each family is different. What works great for one person, may not work for you. It is okay to seek advice, or to listen to tricks and tips that others used, but when it comes to negativity, just don't even pay attention to it. You will be much happier.
8. Do activities they like to do with their kids
Happy moms don't only do what everyone else likes to do, but what they like to do as well.
Sometimes we underestimate our kids. We don't think they can do things beyond what is recommended for their age group, but that's not always the case. If you are tired of playing with Barbies and only watching Playhouse Disney, let your kids try things you like to do. You may discover your child really likes to run, and can keep up with you pretty well. Or maybe will have a green thumb just like you. Perhaps they have a really good eye for taking pictures.
You will never know unless you let your kids try. Find your favorite hobby, and take your kids along. Teach them how to do what you're doing, or a more simplified version. You may learn to love your hobby even more because your child is doing it with you!
9. Realize they are doing a good job
Happy moms give themselves credit when credit is due.
It is easy to see all the things you are not doing. All the healthy meals you are not eating, and all the educational games you are not playing. Instead of getting down on yourself for not being the perfect mom, look at the good you have done. See how happy your kids are. How loved they feel. Put aside your expectations of what a perfect mom is, and realize you are being the mom your kids need.
Being a happier mom is easier than you think. If you are struggling with one or two aspects of motherhood, give one of the above suggestions a try.
