Eric Roberts is opening up about his past mistakes and seeking to make amends with his family in his new memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far. The 68-year-old actor reflects on the turbulent times in his career and personal life, shedding light on how his struggles with drug and alcohol abuse strained his relationships with his sister, Julia Roberts, and his daughter, Emma Roberts.

Back in 2018, Eric garnered attention when he candidly spoke about his estrangement from Julia during his battle with addiction. "If it wasn't for me, there would be no Julia Roberts and no Emma Roberts as celebrities, as actresses, and I'm very proud of that," he told Vanity Fair at the time. However, with the release of his memoir, Eric is revisiting those comments and offering a heartfelt apology.

In an excerpt shared by People, Eric writes, "I hope Julia will accept this public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said." He acknowledges that his addiction issues not only affected his bond with Julia but also their other sister, Lisa Roberts Gillan. "I wouldn't be surprised if they suffered from PTSD from when it was dangerous to be around me," he admits. "Lisa and Julia needed love and protection -- instead they got fear and uncertainty."

The actor also opens up about the biggest consequence of his addiction: losing his daughter, Emma. The 'American Horror Story' star is the daughter of Eric and his ex, Kelly Cunningham. The couple broke up when Emma was a baby, and Julia supported Kelly during her custody battle against Eric. While he doesn't delve into the specifics of the situation in his memoir, Eric concedes that Julia made the right decision at the time.

"I imagine I will remain as Julia's brother and Emma Roberts' dad for the rest of my life," Eric writes. "I'd like to make good on that, to move aside proudly and with grace. That's part of the reason for writing the book."

Though neither Julia nor Emma has publicly addressed their current relationship with Eric, it's clear that the actor is proud of his daughter's accomplishments. "I'm in love with my daughter's work," he shares, expressing admiration for Emma's career.

Eric's memoir is not just a reflection on his past but also an attempt to mend the broken bonds within his family. He hopes his public apology will be a step towards healing and reconciliation.
