With the decay of traditional morals in society prevalent, many families are seeking to make their homes a refuge from the wickedness of the world. Religious leader Richard Scott has suggested, that, "One of the greatest blessings we can offer to the world is the power of a Christ-centered home where the gospel is taught, covenants are kept, and love abounds." So the question is, how can one create a home where Christ is the center?

Why is a Christ-centered home important to families?

Building strong family values based on a role model such as Christ will help children and parents to unite together as a solid unit in love and happiness. Teaching and living what he taught is a good moral foundation upon which to build values and lives.

Teach children to make promises with God

Whether through a religious ceremony or within one's heart, making promises to God is a good way to stay on a righteous path. Sometimes, it may help to write these promises down - such as keeping the commandments or abstaining from harmful substances. Be sure to also write down key benefits of keeping these promises - such as a safety or good health.

Try to hold family prayer and read scriptures together daily

Often, the best teaching happens in the home. Reading scripture that is sacred to one's religion is a great opportunity to learn how to be more like Christ and lead a better life. Praying together and seeking the Lord's guidance daily will strengthen family units. As the oft-quoted saying goes, "A family that prays together stays together."

Gather the family together for value-based lessons and fun activities at least once a week. Taking time to devote to family to teach lessons on values such as honesty, chastity and obedience gives families time to learn and grow together while discussing important subjects. Help each member to understand the principles being taught as well as address any questions they may have. Also, bonding together doing fun activities helps families to get to know each other better and develop friendships within the family unit. Spending quality time together is key.

Set an example

If children are expected to live a Christ-centered life, parents must set the example of how to do it. Words are simply not enough. The actions of righteous parents will shape and mold a child's desires and behavior to do good.

Be Christ-like not only in the home, but also outside the home

Christ has asked people to mourn with those who mourn, comfort others, take care of the sick and needy - basically to act as he would act. By acting accordingly, the needs of others are met, while the doers are learning how to live a Christ-centered life.

Learn to recognize and listen to the Holy Spirit

By earnestly striving to do these things, individuals and families will more readily be able to listen to promptings from the Holy Spirit that can guide and direct hearts and minds. The more those promptings are acted upon, the more easily recognized it will become. Teach children to recognize those feelings so they can act upon them - whether it is to exercise good in the world or to protect them from danger or wrong choices.

Living in a Christ-centered home can be an enriching and fulfilling experience for individuals and families. It will help each member to live better and have a sure immovable foundation upon which to build their life.
