God's plan is incredible, and learning more about it is an amazing experience. It is the mainstream Christian belief that we live, we die and we live again. But what about life before birth? Did our soul exist somewhere? Let's look at a few Bible verses that give us some telling clues (we'll be using the King James Version).
DISCLAIMER: If there was a doctrinal conclusion to this question that the Christian world had already largely accepted, then you probably wouldn't have clicked on this article to begin with. The Bible, as Christianity's main sacred text, can be interpreted in many ways; so to some, these verses may not adequately answer this question. However, there isa way to know the truth for yourself, which we'll discuss at the end of this article. Here we go:
Jeremiah 1:4-5
4. Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
5. Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee,
and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
These verses seem to suggest that before the prophet Jeremiah was born, God knew him. Additionally, it seems God interacted with Jeremiah to some extent in the form of sanctifying and ordaining. While this verse doesn't give any clues as to what form we took, it does present convincing evidence that we did exist before birth.
Job 38:4, 7
4. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
7. When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Passage four describes a time before the earth was created. Passage seven adds more information, saying that before earth was created the sons of God shouted for joy. Does this indicate that before birth we resided with God? If we consider ourselves sons and daughters of God then that's very possible.
Revelation 12:7-9
7. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8. And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
These passages clearly outline a conflict that took place in a place separate from earth that involved the archangel Michael, other angels, along with Satan and his followers (also called angels). They suggest the existence of social organization and interaction.
Some Christians believe that we, before birth, were these angels that fought against Satan.
So, what?
As mentioned above, the Bible is subject to interpretation. So is it possible to really know the truth?
Of course it is.
Anyone can lie, anyone can be mistaken, anyone can be deceived ... except one being: God. He cannot lie. He is never mistaken. He knows all.
