A new baby changes your family forever. A child's reaction to a new brother or sister can vary from adoration to indifference to jealousy. She will likely feel all three a different times. This little girl takes to the role of big sister right away with a knack for calming baby you can't help but smile at.

Before you bring your child to meet the new baby, be sure to tell her these three things.

1. Be soft

When the moment comes to meet her brother or sister, your child will be excited. For little ones, excitement displays physically. Have your child practice with a doll how to touch the baby, how to hold the baby and how to use a soft voice with the baby. This way, when you get to the hospital she'll know she can't be bouncing off the walls or jumping on the bed.

2. It's our baby forever

Kids often want to "give back" the baby. The reality of a newborn may not be what your child expected her little brother or sister to be like. Let your child know before she meets baby that this baby is yours and no tantrum will change it.

3. There's lots of love to go around

Even though a new baby will take lots of Mom and Dad's attention, tell your child you will still love her just as much as ever. Tell her you hope she'll love the new baby just as much as you do. After visiting the new baby, you may want to take your older child to do something special, like stop for a milkshake. This can help affirm you'll make time for her, too.
