Families typically move often for numerous reasons. The average American will move an estimated 11.7 times in their life. Moving can signify opportunities, like long-term wealth accumulation or a new job. Still, people also move because of instability, like job loss or foreclosure.
During this high inflation period, many families have thought about moving to a place where the cost of living is relatively low. With families on the brain, WalletHub recently compared 180 U.S. cities based on 45 key metrics considering family dynamics, like local school quality, housing costs, and healthcare systems.
While not perfect due to personal preferences, their findings will hopefully give movers a perspective on their options. WalletHub identified the top 10 best cities to raise a family as Fremont, California; Overland Park, Kansas; Irvine, California; Plano, Texas; South Burlington, Vermont; San Diego, California; San Jose, California; Scottsdale, Arizona; Gilbert, Arizona; and San Francisco, California.
Raising a family can be a tall order. With so many essential decisions, deciding where to turn for help regarding family matters can be challenging. Rob Weisskirch, professor of human development at California State University, Monterey Bay, says that a child’s development is a byproduct of their environment. Families with access to cultural assets in a city can give their children learning experiences that can affect their understanding of the world. He added that at the same time, families that live outside the city can find things that are consistent with their values.
For example, some parents might want to give their children a strong connection to the outdoors and nature and choose to live in areas for easy access to those opportunities. These opportunities can provide an education on how nature works that other children in the city won’t get. However, Weisskirch believes that indicators point to families reassessing their priorities and looking to balance family and work life.
He also thinks that children have found that technology doesn’t substitute face-to-face interactions with their friends. He predicts that more families will go to parks, museums, and outdoors to make up for time under restrictions. Finally, he says that families should pay attention to school quality when looking to put down roots. Nowadays, schools provide more support for families and be centers of learning that aren’t easily measured through standardized testing.
Families move for various reasons, whether for a new job or to find somewhere cheaper. Still, families have a lot to consider when choosing where they want to live, and thanks to WalletHub’s research, families will have the best places to raise a family.
