You could go to the top psychologist or counselor in New York City for relationship advice. You could ask your mom how to be the happiest couple possible. But here are some pieces of advice that you won't find anywhere else, and that's because they come from kids.
You may laugh, but listen to what these little ones have to say about what love truly is and how to have a long and happy life. You'll be surprised.
"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." Chrissy, age 6
Chrissy has a point. Love is selfless and kind and always giving. It works the same way in a relationship. You want to give the best of yourself to the best person you can find. If you want to have a happy relationship, be willing to keep giving them your best.
"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Tommy, age 6
Tommy is right. In order to live that happily ever after in any relationship, because the honeymoon phase does wear off, it's important to be friends. Couples who only talk about love or who only flirt will not go far. Friedrich Nietzsche said, "It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages."
"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."Jessica, age 8
Jessica knows what she's talking about. People forget too often to show their love to the people closest to them. Too often, we treat those close to us with less affection or care. This should be the opposite. A good companion will show love daily and speak kindly always. A strong relationship is just that important.
"One of the people has freckles, and so he finds somebody else who has freckles too."
Andrew, age 6
Andrew's advice has a much deeper meaning. To have a happy relationship, it's important to have the same goals, dreams, desires, and even some hobbies. If he is uninterested in everything you do, things are going to be a lot harder. However, if you both love the same sport, games, movies, or more, the relationship is going to be more fun and active. Couples who do things together, and enjoy things together, will be so much happier. Find someone who is like you, but don't forget that differences can also complete you.
"Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like a truck!"
Ricky, age 7
Ricky may have funny advice, but it is also the most profound. Women are complex and sometime require a compliment here or there ... or everywhere. Tell her she is beautiful, gorgeous, downright incredible. OK, that's a bit much, but you get the idea. To have a happy relationship you should have a happy romance and a happy outlook on life in general. Even when she looks like a truck.
After hearing what these children have to say, maybe it's time to make some changes. Be a little more aware of the words you speak and the things you do, especially to the person you love the most. Help out, listen, and love. Do something more - surprise that special someone. But don't just do it once. Be youthful and love like you mean it.
