The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old senior and talented gymnast who was tragically shot and killed near campus. The incident has left the campus and surrounding community in shock and grief.

Kara Welsh, a standout member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team, was fatally shot at an off-campus residence. Authorities responded to a report of gunfire and found Welsh with critical injuries. She was rushed to the hospital but, tragically, did not survive. The shooting occurred in a residential area near the university. Present in the apartment upon the officers’ arrival was Chad Richards, who is listed as a member of the school’s 2021-22 wrestling team. Responders determined the two had engaged in an altercation and arrested Richards, who faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangered safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed.

Kara Welsh was more than just a talented athlete; she was a beloved member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community. Known for her dedication and passion for gymnastics, Welsh had earned recognition for her contributions to the university's gymnastics team. Her coaches and teammates remember her as a hardworking, determined individual who brought joy and energy to everyone around her.

Welsh was a member of the Warhawk gymnastics team and last year, she won the individual national title on vault at the NCAA Division III Championships.

"It's a very tight-knit community. She had roommates that were on the team. You know, some of her best friends were on the team," said Ryan Callahan, Athletic Director of UW-Whitewater. "Kara was an amazing person, you know, her loss is going to be felt forever. We talk a lot about legacy, you know, from our staff and to our students. And, you know, what's your legacy going to be here? And Kara left a legacy that's — that's ingrained in gymnastics and Warhawk athletics forever."

In the wake of Welsh's tragic death, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has come together to support one another. A candlelight vigil was held on campus, where students, faculty, and community members gathered to honor Welsh's memory and offer comfort to those affected by the tragedy. The university has also made counseling services available to help students cope with the loss.

Kara Welsh's untimely death has left a void in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community. As the investigation continues, her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
