Imagine mummies coming to life at the Natural History Museum or talking to paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts. That's what today's holiday is all about. While we don't expect to see T-Rex bones walking around town (even though that would be both scary and amazing), many museums pull out all the stops on June 24. Find a museum near you to get a cut of the action.
Whether or not there's a museum near you, try this fun activity to bring art to life.
Make Art Come to Life
You and your kids can become a masterpiece by recreating one with things you already have at home. Post a picture of your art recreation with #FamifiCelebrateThis for the chance to win a $50 gift card. That, and bragging rights, of course. Read the official contest rules here.
Supplies
"¢ Camera (your phone works great)
"¢ Random objects from around the house (the more random, the better)
Directions
- Pick a piece of art. If you need some inspiration, check out this list of 100 famous paintings or use the Google Arts & Culture app to find which painting your kids look like.
- Find objects around the house. What do you have that could substitute for a pearl earring in Vermeer's work? Does your cat want to play the role of shark in "Watson and the Shark"? Or maybe you could recreate "Starry Night" with your bodies?
- Set the scene. Dress up, get your props in place.
- Snap a picture. Take a picture of your work of art come to life.
- Post your masterpiece. Upload your picture to social media with #FamifiCelebrateThis and tag Famifi for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card. The contest opens June 24, 2018 and ends July 1, 2018. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges and notified via social media. See official rules here.
Famifi This: Education Researcher said, "Students who are exposed to cultural institutions, like museums and performing arts centers, not only have higher levels of engagement with the arts but display greater tolerance, historical empathy, as well as better educational memory and critical thinking skills." In other words, not only is playing with art fun for the family, it makes them better humans.
