Relationships can be difficult. It takes two people to make a relationship successful. Each relationship looks and feels different, but when both parties are willing to work together, the relationship is a healthy and safe place to come home to. We often tell people to wait until they're older because mature people are usually better at working on the relationship.
Recently Amy Johnson opened up about what relationships are like for mature women. She discussed how each relationship is different, but mature woman are better at having healthy relationships.
These 11 qualities aren't always easy. As you are reading this list, instead of thinking "I can't ever do this," focus on what qualities you want to have and make goals to achieve these qualities.
1. They don't only have one person in their life
We all want that fairy-tale ending where we find our prince and run away together forever. Realistically, we need more than one person in our life. Relationship expert Sara Altschule says, "When couples spend too much time together, it can create an unhealthy codependence. Maintaining healthy boundaries and some autonomy will make for a long-lasting partnership."
2. They are willing to make sacrifices
Relationships take work, time, love and sacrifices. Mature women are willing to make the sacrifices for their sweetheart. Make sacrifices for your spouse - they will appreciate knowing that you are willing to give up things for them (don't keep score of the sacrifices you are making and they aren't - mature women don't keep score). It will depend your love and make your relationship last forever.
3. They are grateful
Be grateful for the big things and the small things. Mature women know everything takes work, but they are grateful for every effort that is made. Johnson said, "After you have been in a relationship for a while, it can be easy to forget to appreciate all of the little things that they do for you. Mature women realize that sharing your life with someone is a gift."
4. They never spend more than they earn
Financial independency is important, and mature women know how to budget. A lot of relationships end because of money problems. Mature women know this and work to not allow money to be a stressor in the marriage.
5. They focus on the good
They are optimistic of the good in their partner and their life. Life is hard, but there are many good things still happening. Stay positive and never give up.
6. They dream
You can be in a relationship and still have dreams. Johnson said, "Mature women understand that a great relationship doesn't drag you down - instead, it should bring out the best in you."
7. They are respectful
Mature women aren't pushy. They respect their partner's feelings, thoughts and personal space.
"Maintaining a joyful relationship means respecting your partner's time, heart, character, and trust," Altschule says. "However, there are many things people do in relationships that can break down respect, like name-calling, talking negatively about the other to friends or family, and/or threatening to leave the relationship."
8. They don't rely on their partner for their happiness
Yes, being in a relationship makes people happier, but there are things in your control that will keep you happy. Save your time and energy by remembering one key rule: Your happiness is your own responsibility. A loving partner will always try to make you happy, but in the end, your positivity is up to you.
9. They are good at making decisions
Good decisions don't always have to come from yourself. Being a mature woman means you are willing to make decisions and you are willing to find the best solutions. Compromising with your sweetheart can be difficult, but you will make the best decisions if you do.
Huffington Post said, "Compromising doesn't mean 'giving in.' It doesn't mean that you lost the fight. In fact, it's the opposite." You will win in your relationship if you are willing to make good decisions together.
10. They don't resent their spouse's achievements
Both of you will have successes and failures. Instead of comparing ourselves to each other, support your sweetheart. Congratulate them when they succeed and cry with them when they fail.
11. They embrace who they are
You are a beautiful person! You have so much to offer to the relationship. We all have flaws and things we can improve, but being a mature woman means you know where you are at and you accept who you are with love.
Being a mature woman takes work, but it is achievable. You are an amazing human being; don't be afraid to reach for the stars. Make goals to have a better relationship and become a better person.
