College calls for endurance and hard work, but ultimately, it can be an absolute blast. Prepare yourself (or your daughter) for college with these 12 tips to ensure college is everything you hoped and dreamed for:
1. It's tempting, but don't skip class
When you skip, you're wasting your (or your parent's) money and missing out on the opportunity to better your abilities.
2. Multi-tasking doesn't always save time
"Switching from task to task, you think you're actually paying attention to everything around you at the same time. But you're actually not," said Earl Miller, a Picower professor of neuroscience at MIT.
Instead, get organized and knock out the most important or time-consuming project first.
3. Know how to do your laundry
Do your laundry once a week is a must. If you let your dirty clothes pile up, laundry day will be an overwhelming beast to conquer and your favorite pair of jeans will never be clean.
Laundry is easy with these five steps:
-
Check your pockets
-
Sort by color and fabric type
-
Know what temperature of water to use for each load
-
How much soap to use
-
Know what can and cannot go in the drier
4. Never put something on the internet you wouldn't like to explain
Once it's on the internet, there's no taking it back, so don't post content you'd be ashamed to explain to your mother or future employer.
5. The pill doesn't work 100 percent of the time
Abstinence is key, but if you must... two forms of birth control is safer than one.
6. Even messy people like neat roommates
Clean up after yourself and life will be better all around.
7. It's OK if choosing a major takes time
It's alright if you don't know what your calling is yet. Take time and explore your options before you decide on what will make you happy for the rest of your life.
8. Separate yourself from technology
Take time to focus on yourself, your school work and your social life. Put your phone down and pay attention. The more connected you are to the world, the more likely you will benefit from the relationships you'll develop with other people.
9. Monitor your mental and physical health
Getting adequate sleep and taking care of your mental health is essential to surviving college. So sleep, eat and be merry for tomorrow you must diet. The freshman 15 is real, so eat right and take care of yourself or you could graduate with a degree and a muffin top.
10. Learn to cook
Pasta is cheap and convenient, but make sure you add some protein - like chicken or eggs - to supply the energy you'll need to stay awake in class.
11. Manage your time and budget
Get a planner. Schedule each class, study time, sleep time and play time. Keep track of your spending so you have enough to pay rent, buy groceries and still have some fun.
12. Be confident
College will be the time of your life if you allow it to be. You've got this!
