Sometimes women have the difficult job of flirting with a timid guy. There are some big differences between outgoing, expert flirters and more inhibited men. So how do you tell the difference between a guy who is shy and someone who's just not that into you? Here are four signs to help you find out what your crush really feels.

1. Avoiding eye contact

It may seem contrary, but someone who is into you will avoid eye contact, especially if he is shy. You may notice them looking at you from out of the corner of your eye, but when you look straight on they find another focus. When you try to talk to them they retreat and appear distracted. But at a distance you can tell they're interested.

2. Avoiding physical affection

Someone shy may not feel comfortable breaking the touch barrier with their love interest. Even seemingly platonic interactions can be rebuffed unceremoniously, making for an awkward encounter. A shy person will go above and beyond to try to keep their feelings buried, which ultimately makes them quite obvious. Someone who feels neutral to you will be fine with a casual touch here and there, so beware of those who "protest too much."

3. Awkward silence

If a bashful man has the hots for you he may go back and forth between being chatty and quiet. But somewhere in between these spurts, there will be an awkward silence or two. These lulls in conversation will be thick with emotion and wanting but are unlikely to be filled by anything but your voice. These silences happen because shy men either second guess what they want to say, or completely blank and lose their train of thought in your presence. The best response on your part is to relax and enjoy the moment. Your calm energy will hopefully help your nervous beau feel more comfortable opening up to you...Or at least help him not dwell on what he should have or could have said.

4. Turning down opportunities

A shy guy can get quite uncomfortable when approached. He can easily feel overwhelmed, and so he'll reject the idea of spending time alone with you for fear of messing up what you already have. Shy men may also be nervous about doing something new and embarrassing themselves. To avoid this, ask if there's something he really likes to do or is particularly good at, then invite yourself to it. This may also make him nervous, but at least it gives him a chance to show off his skills.

Figuring out a shy guy can be tricky. Being too upfront may scare him away. It won't necessarily change his feelings but it probably won't get the relationship started. But doing nothing means his feelings may just fizzle out. A light touch and careful approach is needed here. Stay close to his comfort zone and maybe sharing your feelings first will help convince him to share his.
