It's been said that wisdom and maturity come with age. However, mental maturity can come at any age to those who are willing to see the world as it is and appreciate the people in it. A mentally mature person has an understanding of right and wrong, based on rational thoughts instead of feelings. Here are five traits of a mentally mature woman:
1. Do you know your limits?
A mature woman knows her limits. She knows when to stop, when to start and what's appropriate for the situation. She has profound insights, not because of age, but because of life experiences.
Take a look at your approach to social media. While an immature person posts only for attention, a mature person knows there's no point in trying to impress other people or give them an impression of a make-believe life they actually don't have.
2. Do you benefit from constructive criticism?
We enjoy compliments as much as we dread criticism. It's normal to be offended by a disapproving comment - that's human nature. However, how you deal with criticism is what differentiates you as a mentally mature person.
A mature woman has a positive attitude and appreciates constructive criticism. She asks: How does this make me a better person? or What are the things I could learn from this? She also graciously accepts compliments.
A mentally mature person knows when someone needs guidance, and she doesn't hold back from helping. However, she doesn't forgo the other person's best interest. Instead of being harsh, she communicates in a way that's constructive and helpful, making the person become better.
3. Do you invest in long-term plans and commitments?
It's fun to be spontaneous and live in the moment. However, a mentally mature woman knows when to focus on just having fun and when to make well-researched long term decisions that best utilize her resources (money, time, effort).
A mature person looks at things with the end in sight.
4. Do you decide based on rational thinking instead of feelings?
Reality - not emotions - motivates the mentally mature woman. A highly sensible person is aware of her emotions, and knows decisions based only on emotion are unreliable. She knows how emotions can affect the situation, and make it look more serious than it is.
Instead, she would withdraw from the scene (if needed), think deeply, ask for advice, consider all findings and then decide. As much as she can, she recognizes strong feelings and makes decisions with both her heart and mind.
5. Do you keep your promises?
Mentally mature women keep their promises. Although some promises are occasionally broken, she always works hard to stick to her commitments. And others notice that conviction. On the rare occasion she can't keep her word, she's strong enough to face the consequences.
That's why a mentally strong woman doesn't easily make promises. She values her reputation and the people who look up to them. She values her commitments because, at some point, she expects the same from other people.
It takes a lot of adjustment, mindset shifts and firsthand experiences to gain mental maturity. If you continue progressing toward these five things, you'll notice changes in yourself, your world views and the people around you.
