The family of the late Johnny Gaudreau visited Calgary recently for a tribute honoring the former NHL star as his previous teams, the Calgary Flames and the Columbus Blue Jackets, played against each other.
During the emotional visit, Johnny's widow, Meredith Gaudreau, shared that she got a new tattoo on her right wrist of her husband's signature.
“I thought it would be cool to say that I did that in Calgary because that is where his autograph really took off,” Meredith shared in an interview after the game with Sportsnet. “It's like, this is where it all began.”
Meredith smiled as she explained that it was her first tattoo, getting her late husband’s name and his number 13 inked on her wrist. “I was a little nervous,” she admitted, “but I really love it.”
Meredith, who has two young children with her late husband and is expecting a third, participated in a pregame tribute on Tuesday night before his two former teams competed.
“Everyone has been so warm,” Meredith said on returning to Calgary, where her husband spent the first nine seasons of his 11-year NHL career. “It feels almost like you've never left when you are here for a couple days, so many familiar faces. And, you know, spent so much time here, so a lot of good memories.”
The memorial ceremony was the latest in a series of honors for Johnny, a seven-time NHL All-Star, and his younger brother Matthew Gaudreau, who also played college and semi-professional hockey. Johnny and Matthew were tragically killed in late August when a suspected drunk driver crashed into them as they were riding bicycles the night before their sister Katie’s wedding. Johnny was 31, and Matthew was 29.
The driver, Sean M. Higgins, reportedly tried to overtake another car and ended up fatally striking both brothers, according to the New Jersey State Police. Higgins, 43, remains in custody as prosecutors prepare to announce formal charges against him.
Meredith and her late husband had a daughter, Noa, 2, and a son, Johnny, who will turn 1 in February. She announced at his funeral that she had recently discovered she was expecting their third child. Matthew and his widow, Madeline, were also expecting their first child together at the time of his passing.
During the Sportsnet broadcast after the game on Tuesday, footage showed Meredith and her two young children sitting on a memorial bench dedicated to the Gaudreau brothers, now located at the Calgary Flames practice rink.
“It’s really special,” Meredith said about the memorial bench, which was made from sticks placed outside Calgary’s home arena following his death.
“[Everyone in Calgary has] been amazing,” Meredith said, wiping away tears. “I read everyone's messages. I feel like it's home away from home still, so it's just really nice. Being able to be here, and having fans see the kids, and there's a ton of people I'm going to see tonight. I am really happy to be here.”
