I've enjoyed reading the daily emails theSkimm sends out Monday through Friday. The emails are short and full of good information. It covers the highlights of the previous day (or weekend) in a humorous but informative way. They provide links to the full news stories if you have the time to read the story in-depth. A quick scan through theSkimm will give you a basic understanding of what stories are most important that morning.
New York Times
Breaking news alerts from the New York Times will occur throughout the day. The headlines are always informative, and only a couple of paragraphs are included in the emails. It will give you a quick and easy summary of anything that is happening right now. Their stories are carefully fact checked and reputable.
CNN Newsletters
I would recommend only signing up for a couple of these newsletters unless you want your inbox flooded with emails every morning. Each newsletter contains a specific type of content: "Breaking News US Edition" and "Breaking News International Edition" and "Nightcap" and "Up to Speed. Out the Door."
The "Nightcap" newsletter is a good way to get updates on any stories you've been following that day. The "Up to Speed. Out the Door." newsletter is sent every morning to fill you in on what you might have missed. Both options keep you informed on the latest and more influential stories.
Wall Street Journal Newsletters
These newsletters are particularly good for those who are interested in business, but "The 10-Point" newsletter provides a clear summary of the top stories trending in the Wall Street Journal. The other newsletters provide a more in depth look into specific areas of interest like "The Capital Journal", which provides a look into what's going on in Washington, D.C., or "MoneyBeat" for a review of stock market action.

If you are looking for a non-US based news organization, or want to see how other countries see the United States, the BBC News email is a perfect one to sign up for to get breaking news emailed right to you. This newsletter provides you a summary of important news from around the world.
