There are many seasons to life. Seasons of brimming prosperity and seasons of grueling hardship. Seasons of intense happiness and seasons of deepest sadness. These times come to all, and they never are going to stop as long as you live. These changing seasons of life can be especially hard to weather when the world as you know it seems to be falling apart around you.
However, these are the moments in which you can learn, find strength, and truly find happiness. Though it might be hard it is possible to be happy now.
Here are some ways that can help you find the light of happiness, even in the darkest of times:
No complaining
This is everyone's favorite pastime, right? Well, it can't be, not any longer. Complaining may feel good in the moment, but once you're done and have said your peace, you realize that things aren't any better and that you feel the same as you did before you complained. Recognize the situation you're in as bad or not as you hoped it would be and move forward. Nothing ever comes from sitting still and complaining about what you wish was different.
Stay grateful
One of the most powerful tools in times of trouble is that of staying grateful, even when it feels your resources, relationships and everything else is fully tapped out. This may be exactly what you don't want to hear, but we all have so much to be grateful for, no matter our situation. Focusing on what we don't have will only create a hunger and agitation that can never be satisfied - an itch that can never be scratched and will ultimately leave you feeling shallow and unfulfilled. So, strive everyday to look for something to be grateful for.
Stay humble
Whether you are a victim or not, remember you are only who you choose to be. While pride is often thought of as the top looking down, often it comes from the bottom looking up. If you feel you're at the bottom, don't direct your animosity toward those who appear to be better off than you, for just as they don't know your struggles, you don't know their circumstances or trials either. No one is immune to this thing called life.
Keep your perspective
Remind yourself that to everything there is a season, and these times too shall pass. You have an infinite power to create, to change and to take control, even if all you can control at the time is your will. Don't give in to the feelings that you're in a pit from which you shall never climb out. There is light all around, just remember to keep your eyes open enough to see it.
Set boundaries
An important part of bringing happiness into your life despite whatever trials you are battling is remembering to set boundaries. If work has you down, don't bring that through the front door when you first get home. Greet your family with warmth, love and kindness. Surely, speak to your spouse openly and frankly about what weighs you down, but don't lash out at those that have nothing to do with how you're feeling. Keep your perspective and recognize where these feelings are really coming from. There are those who love you, and they will always be in your corner.
Look beyond yourself
Always remember what is most important. Everyone struggles with their trials, their demons. Remember, no matter what you're going through, someone, somewhere, has invariably gone through something similar. We all struggle, and it's when we come to this knowledge that we are most able to practice empathy and help those hands that hang down along their way.
The trials you face, that you slog through, that you may even hate, are here not only for you to grow from, but so that you can help others do the same.
Educate yourself
Going through something you don't understand can be incredibly frustrating. Becoming educated (formally and informally) about what pitfalls lie before us can only help us be better prepared and better equipped to experience happiness while in the dark times that lie ahead.
Continuing your education can be very helpful in helping better prepare you to succeed in the future and help open doors to help you overcome your trials. With more than 85 graduate programs at Brigham Young University there maybe one program for you that can help you better prepare to succeed in the future. Knowledge has always been, and will be, an incredible enabling power.
