Selena Gomez has openly shared her personal journey toward becoming a parent, revealing how her health challenges have influenced her path to motherhood. The beloved "Only Murders in the Building" star has never shied away from discussing her mental and physical health struggles. Recently, in a heartfelt interview, she discussed the impact of her health diagnoses on her fertility for the first time.
"Unfortunately, I can't carry my own children. I have numerous medical issues that would endanger both my life and the baby's," Gomez explained, acknowledging the grief she felt upon receiving this news. Despite this initial heartache, Gomez is now looking at surrogacy and adoption as promising alternatives. She expressed gratitude for the wonderful people who enable these options, emphasizing that while it might not be the path she originally envisioned, she is in a much better place now.
"I'm excited for what this journey will look like," she said. "It may be different from what I imagined, but it will be my journey, and in the end, it will be my baby."
The “Emilia Perez” star also noted that she’s not pressuring her boyfriend, music producer Benny Blanco, to have kids yet.
“We always make sure we’re protecting what we have, but there’s no rules,” she said. “I want him to always be himself. I always want to be myself.”
Selena Gomez's health struggles are well-documented. She was diagnosed with lupus in 2015, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own healthy tissue, leading to inflammation and pain. In 2017, she underwent a life-saving kidney transplant, with the kidney donated by her friend, actress Francia Raisa. In 2020, Gomez revealed she was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Her health journey was poignantly chronicled in her 2022 documentary, "My Mind & Me."
Earlier this year, Gomez told Time Magazine that she decided she would adopt at 35 if she stayed single.
“I was alone for five years, and I got really used to it,” she said. “A lot of people are afraid of being alone and I probably tortured myself in my head for like two years being alone, and then I kind of accepted it. Then I came up with my plan, which was I was going to adopt at 35 if I had not met anyone.”
Through her openness and resilience, Selena Gomez continues to inspire many. Her honest reflections on her journey to motherhood serve as a powerful reminder that there are multiple paths to becoming a parent, each filled with its own unique challenges and joys.
